Volusion overview

Volusion customers can choose from a range of different subscription plans, and upgrade as their businesses grow.

Payment plans 

One of the key benefits of Volusion is the flexibility of the payment plans – customers can choose from packages starting at £9+VAT per month, making it ideal for start-ups with limited cash flow.

However, the entry-level package is a bit basic, and ecommerce businesses will need to upgrade if they want to use some of the better features. Some competing packages offer more features for the price.

Design and usability 

Setting up an ecommerce business with Volusion is really easy. The design tools and administrative interface are both really intuitive, making adding content and new products really quick and easy, and you don’t need any special tech skills.

As part of the design package, Volusion provides around 80 free template websites to choose from, and you can purchase additional templates from a bank of around 350. The customisation tools mean that creating something unique to suit your business is really simple.

Thankfully, all the templates offer responsive storefronts – an essential feature for any modern ecommerce store. If there is one downside, it’s that some of the 350 additional templates seem a little pricey, especially compared to those from competing platforms.

Features 

Volusion is packed with shopping and marketing features, as long as you’re willing to fork out for the right package. The mid range ‘Plus’ package it has pretty much everything you need, including reviews, product comparisons, gift certificates, promotional emails, marketing tools and cart abandonment notifications.

In the higher tiered plans, you’ll find some really useful features, like the ability to integrate with Amazon and to create eBay storefronts in minutes. Another useful feature is the Social Store Builder, which provides excellent Facebook integration, and the ability to easily list products on your profiles.

Admin & security 

The back office side of Volusion is pretty good – seamlessly interacting with dropshipping partners and integrating with popular analytics and accounting packages. Managing the site on the go is simple thanks to the mobile app, which allows you to control everyday tasks wherever you are. 

Volusion offers a range of security features, including protection for both store and credit card data. In addition, all web pages are protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption – but you will have to pay extra to encrypt credit card transactions.

Support and backup

Volusion really excels when it comes to the customer support side – with 24/7 telephone, email and live chat meaning you can always get hold of someone when you need to.

It also comes with an extensive online manual, knowledge base and FAQ section, along with tutorials and videos on how the software works.

Our verdict

Volusion is one of our favourite ecommerce software services, and up there with the best available. If you’re planning on starting an ecommerce business, then you should definitely consider it – they offer a 14-day trial, so you can test it out before you commit.
